Bonne Année

Just a quickie post to wish you all a happy new year. Lovely and sunny here at the mo but ruddy cold. Fortunately my hobby room is the warmest in the house so that’s all the excuse I need to sit in there all day and furrtle around with my toys.

I’d give you a run down of what I’ve achieved in 2025 but I’m buggered if I can remember to be honest. There was a lot of 28 mm stuff as I recall and not enough mini campaigns fully documented to completion…partly cos I ran out of puff and partly cos I often played them out and forgot to fully record them at the time. I’ll try and do better in 26…promise.

I’ve some new 100YW figures to get on with and some Empress Sikhs (for no good reason other than they look lovely sculpts)… and that ladies and gentlemen (apart from the SCW Hotchkiss team) is the sum of my remaining lead pile. Nice.

I suspect that first part of 26 will be mostly VBCW, because I’m still pretty jazzed about it and work on the property through Feb / March (repainting the shutters on the barn and the gîte) will take the place of painting miniatures. Doh.

Enough. Here’s a few more piccies of VBCW progress.

Welcome to Brompton, gateway to the west. I managed to get CHAT GPT to sketch out a map of the fictional midlands town in which my VBCW games will take place. For some reason the third iteration saw the Brompton Rovers FC stadium replaced with a cricket ground, the loss of the buildings in the railway station and the word Weca instead of area. (Me neither). Apparently god loves a tryer so I’ll keep on  with the AI bothering. Most of my current terrain is centred on the industrial “Weca” but I’ve plans for some terraced back to back housing too, if the money holds out.

Another couple of factories have been produced. This is Farrington’s (another family member I’m afraid) famous in my alt 1937 for the production of Bile Beans. Bile Beans by the way were an actual thing. Google ‘em if you’ve a mind to.

The new twin turreted Austin Armored car known as “unlucky for some” due its number 13 (third vehicle of the 1st troop).

And another shot from the other side because it’s crapiness is sort of sexy.

I’ve settled on the three main factions making up the Brompton Local Defence Volunteers and have created some roster sheets as an aide mémoire. They’ll be laminated and allow me to add character traits if any are generated between games.

This bunch are supporters of the King, (Edward VIII) but reject the legitimacy of the Mosley government.

These lads are mostly workers from the Brompton Carpet Factory and they see the current troubles as an opportunity to set up a socialist utopia. They are against the monarchy and Mosley. Note Comrade Stranski doesn’t actually work at the factory, he just turned up one day with a Russian / English dictionary and a lorry load of weapons. Unusual for Russians to be fomenting strife, eh.

The third faction are made up of those appalled by the kings marriage to an American divorcee, and his decision to empower the upstart Mosley. They demand new elections the abdication of Edward and his replacement with the stuttering Prince Albert (no, not the piercing) currently hiding out in Canada with the rest of the royals.

Haven’t quite finished this roster yet, though the figures are painted. I’ll probably add a few International Fascist League Spanish Volunteers to the bottom somewhere.

I’m not entirely sure why I bothered dividing the Brompton defenders into three separate armed factions other than I’ve a vague notion that they could at some point end up fighting amongst themselves. We’ll see.

Right it’s time to start blanching the sprouts for next Christmas (only 350 something shopping days to go) so I’m going to sling my hook.

Play nice.

Toodleooh.

  1. Nice work on the various factions. I rather like the map (that's the first positive thing I've ever said about AI).
    Happy New Year old fruit.

    1. Yeah, the map even with its flaws is better than I could have drawn. Like a lot of other bloggers I’m just seeing if it offers anything of immediate use to the hobby.

  2. Your roster sheets look very professional. Happy new year.

  3. The Austin Armoured Car turn out exactly right! Perfect paint job and Farrington’s is looking good.

I thought it was 350 days to Christmas, but then I remembered it starts on 1st October!

    1. Hey Norm, glad you like the Austin. Christmas here starts about mid November, so not as bad yet as the UK. Lots of French summer holiday adverts on the TV though. Some things are the same the world over!

    2. I've seen Xmas stuff on sale in August here, which is criminally early IMHO:(!

    3. Bugger me, that’s really stretching it.

    1. Thanks Jon, happy new year to you and yours too. Not sure what I’ll do about the cards for the BUF since most of the figures have the same pose and all wear a uniform. Might have to put labels I under the bases I guess.

  5. That is a great map and at first I thought you had repurposed an exisiting one, it looks so good! The WECA bit made me laugh as here, that is the 'West of England Combined Authority' which is frankly about as useful as a chocolate teapot:(. Great work on the buildings and the armoured cars, all of which look great. The cards and factions work well and for my AVBCW, I have about 6 factions, so I have plenty of options for campaign narratives and large games too.

Happy New Year to you and yours!

    1. Bonne année Steve, the map looks a bit like it should be on the cover of an Enid Blyton book I reckon, so kudos to CHATGPT for getting that bit right if nothing else. lol. I’ve been a busy lad hobby wise over the last few weeks but it makes me wonder how anyone with a job or an active family life gets any of this stuff done. Thank god for retirement.

    2. It would be great to see some in action game shots done in an Enid Blyton style illustration, if Chat GPT could oblige, as I think it would look rather spiffing! BTW, I love the fact that Frank Upton's second weapon are some sandwiches!!!

    3. And Jim Barclay’s secondary weapon is bad breath. If you knew what the filling was in those sandwiches btw you’d be hard pressed to choose which was the worst. Lol.

  7. The map looks great JBM and will inspire plenty of scenarios.

I like the factory and the armoured car. Bile Beans sounds just the thing to start a civil war. And if the workers can slip a handful or two into the fascist's lunch rations they may get a win by default. 😂

Happy New Year and I hope all the 2026 plans come to fruition.

    1. Cheers Ben happy new year to you and yours too! Not sure how you manage it being upside down at the bottom of the world and all that, but I take my hat off to anyone who can do Xmas and the new year in the middle of the summer. lol.

  9. The VBCW map and roster sheets are top notch JBM, really like them, your project is taking shape very nicely and I hear what you say about the Empress Sikhs, even if they are of no use they are lovely sculpts. All the best to you and yours for 2026.

    1. Thanks Donnie, I have my fingers crossed that your health (and luck) improves in 26. I’m going to find a use for those Sikh lads come hell or high water!

    2. Could the Sikhs be a VBCW contingent sent by India to restore order in England... plus strike a few favourable trading deals? 😁

    3. Tee hee - good idea Ben but their uniforms are 80 years out of date - these lads were for my mutiny project.

    1. Hello Lee! Lovely to hear from you. Hope alls well at your end. Sunny here at the moment (for which I’m grateful) but the grey days don’t half grind me down. Spring can’t come soon enough despite the extra property related workload.

  11. That armoured car looks great, let's hope it's lucky 13.. I do like the idea of 'imagi-nation' type forces based on your hometown area, and the industial (yet also close to rural) Midlands seems a really good choice - looking forward to seeing the games. Happy New Year!

  12. Hi David, happy new year to you mate. I hope first time out syndrome won’t strike ALL of my new toys but with only 6mm of armour plate on the Austin the odds don’t look great for it do they?!

  13. AI is getting better for sure. I recently used Grok to make some maps for my DnD games and they turned out very usable. Not perfect by any means, but I was impressed with the results. Yours looks authentic enough and I like the name you came up with, rather convincing for a Midlands dwelling.

Liking the groupings of belligerents for your planned campaign. Will there be local bobbies and so forth too?

    1. Hello Dai, nice to hear from you. Happy new year. Brompton got its name from a track by Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer [think white rapper from the 1930’s with a handlebar moustache] I couldn’t get it out of my head for a day or two. Bobbies. Yeah I’d like a couple but finding the models could be a bit expensive - the Warlord Sealion set has one…but I don’t really want the rest of the figures that’d come with it. Hey ho. As I’ve said before I’ve short arms and deep pockets.

    2. Great Escape Games do a pack of Bobbies for their "Chicago Way" Brit expansion (Think Peaky Blinders era - kinda the correct timeline, right?)

https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=19566 Northstar Minis in the UK sell them or you can order them direct from GEG, whichever offers the best shipping to the mainland. :)

  14. O and that Armoured Car looks GREAT! Such a clanky looking tin-can on wheels. So fun.

    1. Isn’t it though! Probably bloody useless against a tiger tank but if you’re a civvie with a water pistol it might prove intimidating. Only 6mm of armour in the better protected places. You’d probably be better off in an actual tin can come to think of it.

  15. Well you have been a busy boy compared to my efforts this year…
Much against my resistance to AI the map looks the business… As does your armoured car.

    All the best. Alt
