Doolally tap and the next big thing

My Nan always used the phrase doolally tap when I was a kid to describe someone who’d gone nuts. You might have come across the more commonly used shortened version - doolally. I always thought she’d added the last bit on by herself but it seems not.

Collins - Word Origins

C19: originally military slang, from Deolali, a town near Mumbai, the location of a military sanatorium + Hindustani tap fever

Anywhoo… things have been going well over here…too well really. I’ve even stopped biting my nails. Which makes me worry. Not that I need an excuse to worry of course, It’s my default setting. Indeed the longer the period of quiet contentment the more the fear builds of the unseen and silently growing disaster that will definitely engulf me when least expected.

Just because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you! Lol.

Man, it’s bloody exhausting being nuts.

Of course I have been here before (in every sense) so it’s come as no surprise that the old noggin has started fraying at the edges a bit. Moments of forgetfulness have increased tenfold and my ability to multitask has disappeared entirely.

The number of times I’ve thought I’ve left comments on blogs or answered emails is ridiculous - so if you think I’m snubbing you, nope, soz,  I’m just in a bit of a blue funk at the mo. (Does anyone other than Biggles actually say that?). I still love you. It’s me not you. (Been a while since I’ve had to say that).

Probably as a fallout from this there’s been some fun with lost car keys and last week a lost wallet (containing every possible piece of frustratingly difficult to replace - yet totally essential documentation).

Amusingly it seems that when I lose my shit… I actually lose my shit!

Which brings us to the next big thing.

I’ve owned and sold…and lost, and re bought…and then sold again ECW armies in every scale (apart from 54mm). Although it remains my favourite gaming period I just didn’t feel I had it in me to repeat the laborious and costly process once again. But with the likes of Iain over at Caveadsum 1471 taunting me with his ever growing collection, who was I kidding?

So the next big thing is ECW. Again.

Now don’t sigh but I’ve gone for 2mm once more because the advantages of this scale are many fold.

1. No bendy pikes. I loved my Baccus 6mm lads and had many a good game out of them but the delicate pikes were a nightmare.

2. Pikes in a single tall block. Not pikes that are irritatingly short and are more like spears (I’m looking at you Pendraken 10mm).

3. 2mm has only a modest array of representational « types ». My wonderful 15mm PP ECW lads were (as always at PP) a pretty decent price per pack…however…there are so many wonderful packs you ended up spending a bloody fortune. I also insist on trying to paint them as though they are 28’s.

4. They’re 3D. The Wofun 18mm flats were an instant army solution for this lazy gamer but they were expensive and somehow never really floated my boat. Does that make me a « sideist » ?

5. I can continue to eat meat and don’t have to sell a kidney. Anything over 20mm is sooooo costly if you are looking to do some of the real big battles at anything like a realistic scale.

6. The ends in sight. Well I’m 60 now, so I don’t fancy spending the next two precious years building up a reasonable force that’ll end up in a skip when I’ve shuffled off this mortal coil. That’s two years I could’ve spent on drugs and hookers as Stew might’ve said. In two years time I’ll probably be into Space Nazis or some other nonsense and deeply resentful of the untouched ECW lead pile taunting me from the cupboard of shame. Gotta get this project done well…and on the hurry up.

So what went wrong with 2mm last time around?

1. The rules. I bought Twilight of the Divine Right and hated them with a passion that I can barely express. Odd since I know that Chris at Horse and Musket likes ‘em and we see eye to eye on most things.

2. The standard units supplied by Irregular are regiments in different size and armament proportions. I just went with it and based away. Natch. Lovely. Except upon completion I recalled that most regiments were routinely merged into standard sized battalia for combat purposes, so my representation of them for larger engagements…was…erm…wrong. Aaargh.

Both of these points are correctable, I’ve now written my own rules, which unsurprisingly I rather like, and I’ve purchased different components from Irregular with which to construct realistic battalia on a broadly 1:3 ratio (thanks to Elenderil’s previous posts over at Small but Perfectly Formed).

2mm Battalia. Horrible close up but forgivable at arms length. I remember a teacher saying something similar about me a long time ago.

Crimmeny or Jings (as they say in Scottish comics from the 1950´s) I’ve even managed to get the terrain looking okay. Representational woodland for your delight and delectation.

All of which will lead me back to a slightly revised version of my ECW alt history campaign from the old blog that some of you may remember.

So that’s still to look forward to. Unless you hate the ECW and think that the ACW is the best CW. (As if).

Time wise I’m going to take a bit of a pause in posting I think while I assemble my two opposing factions for this slugfest. Maybe do one post in December then come back in Jan 24. Part of me is wondering if this might be a good way to round things off in toto. Going out as I came in so to speak, with an ECW campaign. I like the symmetry of it. I’ll get back to you on that one. The jury is still out.

If I don’t drop a post before the big day have a great Xmas, kwanza, festivus, bachanalian mid winter sex feast or whatever is your jam.

Toodleooh.

  1. Hang in there, Mark! You have a support network ready to jump into action when you need a pick-me-up. Putting away the brushes and project plans at 60 is a bit premature in my book. Hopefully, these thoughts will pass.

A new ECW project in 2mm? Hmm. I know a number of gamers who have recently undertaken 2mm projects in a variety of periods. I wish you well on yours. With luck, I will see you at the gaming table manhandling your opponents, once again, before Christmas.

    Take care of yourself.

    1. Cheers Jon. I don’t think I’ll ever kick the hobby…but the blogging aspect is the thing I’ll be considering. It’s actually achieved it’s initial goal which was to find a community of good folk to correspond with on matters relating to gaming. The fact that it’s also led me to your wondrous zoom emporium is an entirely unexpected bonus. Lol. I hope to see you before Xmas too.

  2. We always used just 'doolally' as kids in Cambridgeshire, but rarely hear it hear in Bristol. Nice to know its origins though:). As Jon has said, hand in there old chap (I've just turned 60 so now my kids class me as 'old' which you can't argue with!) and as a community we can all chip in to cheer each other up when we need it.

I did dabble in 2mm years ago for the ECW (I think my painted figures are still on the IM website) but never settled on a set of rules or how to get the visuals right for the games. Maybe something to revisit as I too don't want to spend ages painting stuff when I'd rather get something sorted and onto the table.

If we don't hear from you before, have a Merry Xmas etc out in France!

    1. Have a good one yourself there sir. The visuals really are very important. Working on it.

    2. Looking forward to seeing how you go about the terrain etc, as the wood looks good already. Roads and rivers I never quite figured out how to make them look good and be modular at this 'scale'. Maybe for most ECW battles they are not that important from what I remember of them?

  3. Yep, it is just Doolally, my parents used it frequently, but the free and easy speak of their generation is coming under increasing pressure from a modern ear, so like much, it is no doubt likely destined to be erased from the language in the not too distant future .... thank goodness we can still say bollocks and have graphic violence on the telly without anyone blinking!

I did 2mm ECW years ago when Irregular first brought the blocks out and I think I used their 'rules in a box' system. I wrote up a couple of scenarios, illustrated with black & white pen and ink plate drawings of period armies / battles, impressed that the table actually looked like those illustrations. It was all very evocative.

As a period of specialism for you, perhaps writing your own rules for ECW might be something that would bring something else to the party.

I sympathise on the blog front, but think it is a handy thing to keep the door open on, just for those times when you feel like you have something to say. I have noticed a slow down in several posters, but when they do post, the enthusiasm for what they are wanting to share comes through and perhaps that is where blogs should sit. The blogger should control the blog, not the other way around.

You might also consider still blogging occasionally, but turning your comments off, it sounds strange at first, but does have merit.

I do like your campaign map and look forward to whatever falls out of it.

See you at the next blog post :-)

    1. Yup. I've slowed my blog down a little recently. Not that there's any greater enthusiasm in the posts but because I currently simply lack the mental energy to generate material for it. Having a blog has encouraged me to play and investigate games at a rate far higher than I would have done had I not got one, but for various reasons the past nine moths has seen me simply too stretched mentally to do that.

But it will stay there even if my rate of posting slows. I enjoy going back to it and reliving past glories :)

I too have considered 2mm ECW. I did my flat paper figure setup back in 2015 just as a way of trying the period, but every time I look at replacing them with figures I find that (i) the cost and (ii) the effort of painting them even to my low standards puts me off. So I stay using the paper. 2mm is about the one way I can manage to put something together.

    2. Cheers Norm & Kaptain, yeah I’ll keep the blog open just in case. There’ll be a few posts worth of ECW coming up no doubt - it’s after that, that the issue arises. No point flogging a dead horse.

    1. Now now Steve, don’t go hating on 2mm. You’re bigger than that. Hell we’re all bigger than that come to think of it, lol. I still love those PP sculpts but like I say I just can paint the same figures all over again. It’d break me. Well it’d break me a bit more. As for the blog thing I’ve never really figured it out. Plenty of pictures, a wide variety of subjects, regular posts, a bit of humour and some banter with the regulars but in 2 years plus it hasn’t even broken the 40 followers mark, so I have to wonder if it’s really « all that »…as my grandkids might say. It’s been a vehicle for connection, support, and approbation and with regard to these aspects it’s more than served its purpose I think. Still chewing it over tbh.

    2. In theory I have over a 100 Followers, but really only 10 - 15 of them are active in posting comments etc. It used to bug me but now I don't worry, rather focusing on my 'regulars', seeing them as some online chums who like my random postings etc. Personally I enjoy your Blog and the variety of subjects covered and hope you continue, but it should be an enjoyable exercise rather than a chore.

    3. Most of us are in the same boat JBM - I even had a half-formed idea about a post on - which posts attract the biggest number of comments! I am very lucky if a post of mine hits 40 comments - and half of them are my replies, of course. I went about 18 months when I first started blogging in 2015 without anyone commenting - go back and have a look if you don't believe me - it didn't stop me inflicting my posts on the uncaring internet!

Yours succeeds in this … big time.

  6. As Jon says, hang in there old fruit. We need you out here man. To keep to the Indian Army slang theme, pop off to Simla, have tiffin with the mems and come back refreshed with all the gossip. There's a G&T, cheroot and a frame of billiards ready for you in the mess whenever you care to call in.
Now in the meantime, if there's a revisit to your ECW campaign in the offing, that's something for us to look forward to. The old one was bostin.

  8. JB, my follow rate looks healthy, but I believe that the vast majority of that number is ‘historic’ since the blog has been around for 10 years and have largely stopped either visiting or reading, perhaps cherry picking topics, especially as I cover both boardgames and figures, which further divides my audience.

I would also be suspicious of the hit counter number as I know I go through periods of intense / insane hits from a particular country that then totally falls right off the radar, no doubt, I have triggered some keyword or some-such that invites bot mania. I have not yet had a visitor in the night, so they have obviously decided that I am just some harmless geek - either that or they just can’t be bothered making it through my long posts :-)

I used to be quite vocal about how visitors should support a blog by making comments and not just treat it as free entertainment without giving a passing courtesy to the blogger, but I have journeyed through the phases of being much more relaxed about it all, to the current point of not particularly caring. Indeed my Commanders web page does not have a function for audience participation, so it just exists for my enjoyment and for those that want to pass through and I am not a million miles away from turning off my own comments button on the Battlefield and Warriors blog, perhaps egged on a bit by a recent spate of spammers that Google seem to have let slip through the net, that I am clearing out each morning.

But separate from that, my blog enthusiasm has simply dropped a bit, not enough to stop writing, but enough to not want to service it as enthusiastically as I once did. I think 2024 will see a shift in my blogging productivity / style - to what? I am not completely sure, we shall see.

I only mention this so that you are aware that yours is not a lone voice.

  9. I hope you feel a bit better soon JBM.
I know how the blog can some times be a bit of a chore and I am in awe of bloggers who can post weekly or more. But as Kaptain Kolbold says it is a great way to remember your old games and I often go through mine when I am feeling a bit down. I also find that even though I only rarely post (and not at all for the past 6 months) when I do the comments always cheer me up.
All the best with the ECW plans. 2mm sounds like a great way to get the big battle feel.
Have a great Christmas with lots of lead under the tree.

  10. I probably already said enough above but got to agree with everyone else - 60 isn't old - I am 61 so I would say that, wouldn't I? In fact, I do, all the time - I like to get it out there before anyone else gets the chance to say it - in fact I totally reject all this BS like 60 is the new 40 - no its not - actually, I had better just stop there as I came within a hair's breadth of contradicting my initial statement that 60 is not old! I certainly hope you, I and our likeminded brethren still have a decade or more left in us - our regular Sunday host Barry is in his mid-eighties! keep on blogging, even if the frequency drops off a bit!

  11. Well on the one hand I'm happy to hear you're back on the ECW trail which I admit to pushing for ( taunting?) but I do hope you don't give up on blogging again, as I enjoyed your previous blog , I'm glad to see your map again. I use my blog to keep a record of what I'm doing and comments are a bonus, sometimes I regularly post and sometimes it's rather more erratic, regular or erratic I would welcome the continuation of your blog, there is still war of the worlds, galleons in the far east and star trek posts to come in addition ECW surely?
    Best Iain

    Replies
    1. Hello Iain. Yeah you’re the one largely responsible for my return to ECW even though it’s in micro scale again. I think erratic posting is the most likely outcome of all this soul searching rather than just closing the blog completely. Some of the gaming stuff that has appeared here and then seemingly fizzled out, like the Trek stuff, has been gamed and gamed and gamed chez moi but I’ve just never reported on it. I felt it was a bit « out there » for mainstream gamers so I kept it on the DL as the kids say.

      Delete
    2. No, it's not too "out there" at all - the Victorian War of the Worlds thing was great - if you have been playing that too and not sharing - yah boo sucks!

  12. One thing about blogging that is definitely positive is the community that's somehow managed to survive when all of the far more convenient and easy alternative social media options are out there. Just reading your comments alone, it's easy to see there are a good bunch of lads and ladesses (Just being inclusive here for fear of being canceled :P.) who'll happily pick you up when you are feeling down.
Works for me too in the same fashion, at least a little. So does red wine.
Hope you don't give up on the blog though - I've only been following for a short while, but I like the way you write and I enjoy the hobby projects you have shared.
Just remember that this is your place and you are the editor, writer and CEO of your blog, so there should be no pressure to worry about posting frequency, or posting at all. Just do so when it strikes your fancy. (You know you have an audience that will be here waiting)
60 ain't that old either. I'm only 13 years behind you and the way things are looking I won't ever get to retire - so at least you probably have that over me. ;)

In conclusion - post or don't. Just don't stop altogether. (That's me being selfish btw)

    1. Hello Dai, yeah there’s a fantastic community of other bloggers out there (of which you are obviously one) and the chat back after every post is the main attraction of the whole blogging thing for an old hermit like me. I have drawn and will continue to draw lots of inspiration from everyone else’s projects - even if my own output dips a bit.

  13. O and 2mm? I get the reasoning behind the scale as smaller scales fit larger battles far better, but the utter lack of detail of 2mm to me kind of makes the scale a bit silly - card chits for units require far less painting time. I think 6mm is about as small as I could go. Still, I will eagerly await your ECW - The 3rd best CW, just saying. (ACW being 1st and Russian CW 2nd.) - campaign. That map is rather nifty!

  14. 60 old! How dare you I’m 66 ( well at least on the outside and maybe in the bones) but mentally I’m still that enthusiastic youngster who took up the hobby the same year Military Modelling hit the shelves of WH Smith’s - well maybe a bit before 😁. For goodness sake don’t give up the blog it can sit there quietly in the corner waiting for you to reach out to us other bloggies … Norm touches upon it on his recent post I think the answer is just to post when you want and not when you think you have to.
First I’m glad you’re picking up the ECW cudgel - 2mm! Maybe it could have been a bit bigger but why not, your last foray looked very good. I’m pleased, very pleased with my PP chaps, although if I was starting again I would most probably do 10mm from Pendraken and use brush bristles for pikes 😁. But I really look forward to seeing some insights into your rules and the armies marching upon this green and pleasant land in the New Year.
Of course you could do this project and go larger with ACW, whilst there are negatives I’m more than happy with Warlord Epics I will be posting a game with them shortly.
Keep positive, keep up the blog and shout out when you feel like it so we few happy few can engage

    1. Graham, your PP lads have caused me great envy. They are truly magnificent. I too would have gone Pendraken but for the pike issues and the desire to do some VERY BIG battles. Warlords epics did appeal for a number of reasons but the reviews were mixed and I didn’t want to do another Wofun. They remain a strong contender for future exploration given their comparative cheapness and their decent looking pikes. I’ll see how I get on with the 2mm - and some of Brigades fantastic buildings in the meantime. The low cost means that a project failure is not totally make or break.

  15. hi JBM, great to see you giving 2mm ECW a go, I think they have great potential, as I think others have pointed out already they look can amazingly like the contemporary illustrations of 17th-Century battles, and you can really do 'big battle' games! I would be sorely tempted to go the same way, but I have these painted and unpainted ( some for 40 years! ) 15mms that have been with me a ling time.. Very tempted to give 2mm a go for a possibe mid-19th Century Europe project.. Writing your own rules is the way to go, too.
I'd also say 'don't give up the blog' , yours is great and I love your funny stuff and anecdotes of la Vie Francais etc. I wouldn't get worried about numbers of followers etc, I reckon many more people read than follow, probably linking from other blogs - I am more pleased that people leave comments, and these are invariably friendly and supportive, which is a lovely morale-booster, we must be doing something right! ( just look at the response to this post ) Like you say, it has been a great intro to a community of other gamers who have become good mates - and the remote games that have resulted are a fantastic bonus!

I think the thrust of my thoughts were why am I still blogging when it’s purpose has now largely been achieved. I won’t fold the blog or blow it up like I did last time, but I think there’ll be a bit less subject variety a greater focus on historical and much less frequent posting. Well that’s the aim anyhow.

  16. Hey Tom, thanks for dropping by. I don’t think you can count yourself as a lurker matey, you’ve posted a few times now and we have of course exchanged the odd off blog email too. Blowing up the old blog was a bit of a mistake wasn’t it…there’s a few bits and pieces I’d like to go back and look at as well. Hey ho. The ECW campaign will be back in the near future and hopefully it’ll be worth the wait. I’ll still be posting but maybe not as often, but you’ve got my email address if you ever want to drop me a line. No worries about the terrain how to’s I’ll get hold of them one day no doubt - spend as much time with your family as you can mate, while you can. I’m sure they’re a big comfort.

  17. Age; comes to us all. Hit 60 last year, 61 rapidly approaching, 67 before I can retire.....
The obvious problems are the bits that start wearing out, the inability to cope with constant change and the awareness of your own mortality.....although all of these may just be me....
Blogs; who are you doing it for? I do mine for me and am constantly amazed that people find any of my drivel entertaining enough to comment. I leave comments on others blogs, but sometimes don't think I have anything to say. Why do we think we have to apart from good manners and politeness? If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything.....
I find blogs much more civilised than some of the email groups and lists I used to be on...
ECW; there's obviously something about the period. Wanted to do it way back when Stuart Asquith posted those ECW battles in Battle. Did it in 15mm but it didn't work. Got rid and went 25mm, had a very nice Gilderesque Royalist Hinchliffe army which was the first army I painted really well following Peter Gilder's booklet from Military Modelling and pictures of his stuff in early MW. Sold it at Northern Millitare and regretted it since. A few years ago, found a second hand copy of Charles Vasey's boardgame the King's War (and subsequently Unhappy King Charles) and the stirrings and desire to do ECW resurfaced. Found myself toying with all sorts of scale ideas before plumping for 15/18mm Blue Moon (a bargain acquisition helped) and half a ton has joined the lead mountain. The idea is to go for one base units of around 12-16 inf and 6-8 cav and use Contrast / Speed paints. Definitely a Dolally Do-over.....☺
