A hard days knight

Rather than continuing to whine like a bitch about how much I hate painting horses I bit the bullet and focussed on getting my French HYW mounted men at arms finished off this week.

Here’s a couple of piccies to chronicle my progress on the HYW and a new addition to the VBCW project.

Mounted men at arms - still musing about heraldry

Same bunch - riding into the sunset.

Another lot - of a slightly lower social standing

Obligatory rear view

The entire French mounted force. I think they look okay.

Off on a tangent. The first of the VBCW new arrivals. I’ll probably magnetise the turret. I’m expecting a lot more VBCW goodness in the post next week.

Straight out of the post box - an Empress Miniatures Lanchester 6 wheeled armored car for Oswalds lads.

Right I’m offski. Toodleooh.

  1. The men-at-arms look great …. Plenty of presence. Is the armoured car a Russian one from the BA-10 type series?

    1. Hi Norm. The armored car actually isn’t a Russian one - it’s full on British. The six wheel variant improved the cross country performance. In use during the mid to late 30’s at both home and abroad. Given the skirmish level battles I’m hoping to fight anything bigger will probably be a bit OP.

  2. The HYW cavalry all came out well. Did you you contrast paint on the horses?

    1. Hi Peter, looks like it doesn’t it, but no, I used different’ strengths of sepia ink on the brown horses and black ink for the others.

  3. Super-doops Mark. Lovely looking nags and kn-nights. A good mix of bays and even the odd chestnut. Noice. The more you whinge the better you paint perhaps? My block is the d@mned 'harness'. It's like rigging on ships. Your saddle straps and reins ares just beautiful.
A magnet for the turret. What a bloody 'famous' idea. I have used little bits of strip magnets to 'hold' 1/700 planes onto stands, but did not consider it for turrets. I'll try that one. Thank you.
    Best wishes, James

    1. Hi James, I can assure you that any recognisable horse types are achieved purely by accident and if my painting was linked to my capacity to whine I’d be at the Aly Morrison level. As to the magnets I wish I could claim the idea but as usual I’ve nicked it from elsewhere.

  4. You may not like painting horses but you have done a fine job on them, great looking cavalry and the parade of them all looks grand, hopefully see what they do on the table! Nice armoured car, should come in handy for the Black shirts.

    1. Cheers Donnie. The black shirts are going to get the best of the equipment since they are using government stocks. Everyone else will be making do with whatever else they can scrounge or cobble together.

  6. You have been working like a dog..after that effort you should be sleeping like a log. But I find the painting that you do, will make me feel all right.... (I'll get my coat..)
    The knights look great, anyway!

  7. Excellent work on the French Arrow Fodder there Mark, I look forward to seeing them under an arrow storm soon!
The "six wheeled" armoured car appears to have about twenty wheels in the packet along with the body and turret!

    1. Arrow fodder. I guess they should be if the billhooks rules work okay. My French force is very cavalry centric come to think of it. They cost a lot of points for each unit so I hope they’re worth it. As for the Lanchester it turns out that they doubled up on the wheels for each of the rear axles to reduce ground pressure.

  8. Nice work on the French toffs Mark. The Lanchester is a nice looking model.

    1. Cheers Chris, I’m quite taken with the Lanchester, I’ve my eye on another weirdo vehicle for the opposition too.

  9. Great looking knights JBM. The magnificent "eights"? All ready to defend a French village from the marauding English bandits. 😂

Good luck with the VBCW project. Always fun to have a series of purchases turning up and opening all the packages.... until you realise you have to paint them 🤣

    1. Hi Ben, yup the packages keep on arriving - and the too be painted pile keeps on a growin’.

  10. Splendid looking knights, the lady doth protest too much, you're clearly enjoying them enormously! Love the Lancaster, it's a really nice vehicle, can't help but think of Peter Sellers Richard III version of the song, period appropriate!

  11. I'm not a fan of painting horses either. Seems like double the work for a singular miniature. But you did a marvelous job on them. 😁

    1. Thanks Stew, that’s nice of you to say mate. At least there’s no horses in the Quar genre?

  12. Lovely job on the knights/men at arms.. but go on, I'll ask... are they wearing galoshes to save them from getting muddy feet?? :o)) Looking forward to seeing that Lanchester when it's built.. may Oswald's boys suffer a thousand punctures!

    1. Hi Steve, no galoshes as yet but by the time this bunch have churned up the ground I’d hate to be an infantryman walking in their wake. As to the VBCW - most of Oswalds opposition have turned up in the post and they’re not going to have an easy time of it even with the Lanchester.

  13. I must be odd (well to be honest there is no must about it), but I like painting horses. It helps that mine are 6mm ones and that I need a lot less of them per base than I do for infantry. Most of mine are roans or bays as I like the contrast the darker tail and mane brings. I find an ink wash over satin varnish makes the horse look far better than my ham handed attempt to do shading using the triad system.
