Secret weapons of the Kaiser - Part 1

Bismarck's overthrow of France in the 70’s had been a phenomenal success, the semi permanent state of revolution that followed, allowing the newly created German Empire to become the dominant force in Europe. This state of affairs would have been enough for Kaiser Wilhelm 1st but not it transpired for his eminence grise. Bismarck knew that in order to ensure continued German overseas expansion, a wounded Britain and its fractious empire would need to be brought to heel. Planning for an invasion began in earnest in 1883, spurred on by reports that HM Government had begun to experiment with technology recovered from their defeated Martian foe.

With a two year search for a way to circumvent the Royal Navy, (of which more later) coming to a dramatic conclusion in a Silesian coal mine, the Iron Chancellor presented an open mouthed Kaiser with a second device that he would use to overawe the British defences should Eagle Day be finally sanctioned.

And here she is…

Der Kleine Dampfpanzerwagen I

Weighing in at 30 tons she has a crew of 6 and is armed with a single 5.7cm Maxim - Nordenfelt cannon. Her naphtha fired 400 horsepower steam engine propels the vehicle at a blinding 6kmh across country though her heavy consumption of powdered coal limits the operational range to a mere 5 kilometres.

I’ll be using The Men Who Would be Kings for the upcoming games and since that rule set does not include armoured vehicles I’ve been having fun making my own dice to determine where any hits on such a vehicle might occur.

The faces shown here include optics, propulsion and the vehicles armour.

For those of a more historically serious disposition I shall eschew any further cod Victorian flights of fancy for a wee while and return to my ECW campaign - well when I’ve finished building my new 4Ground windmill that is.

    1. Cheers Norm, it’s been about 10 years since I last painted an AFV. So much quicker and easier than hordes of infantry that’s for sure! Maybe I should get into Flames of War (joke) the only games of which I’ve ever seen resemble giant tank car parks filled with king tigers.

  2. Splendid device - I think that the crew should hope someone invents the carbon monoxide alarm very soon. Maybe a canary could be carried?

    1. Well, the whole shebang is powered by steam, so I’m not sure about the carbon monoxide / canary thing, however given that it’s crewed by the filthy hun perhaps they’d take one or two along as a handy snack?

  3. Hello old chap,

Looks splendid! Are the crew infantrymen or is it classed as a land ship with a naval crew? If the latter it would be great to see a tropical service version with a white hull and yellow ochre upperworks!

    All the best,

    DC

    1. Hi David, I think this would have an army crew since the Prussians / Germans would not have had the same “senior service” navy issues that the British would have had. With that said, a Seebattalion version in the white and ochre would look really nice wouldn’t it!?

  4. That's a nice and simple model to fit in with a pre-WWI narrative:)

    1. Hi Steve, as I’ve said before I’m trying to keep the science broadly plausible - so no death rays or Tesla cannon etc, for the Germans at least. The British forces have been exposed to much more fanciful stuff left behind by the Martians but I’m not sure how much of it the 19th century boffins could’ve managed to understand or make operational.

  7. What a fantastic flight of fancy, the Kleine Dampfpanzerwagen looks wonderful. As to crew, the later (WW1)A7 had engineers to steer it, infantrymen to man the MG's and artillerymen to operated the main armament, if my memory serves! As for FoW unfortunately I agree - I have large collections of German, British and Soviet forces, but rarely use them, and when I do, the results are generally unsatisfactory! I think it works well when played as designed - a company sized unit of infantry and a few vehicles - if it expands, it becomes more and more unrealistic,,,,

    1. Hey there matey, thanks for dropping by. Glad you liked the totally made up A7V knock off. Given how much steam machinery, bunkered coal etc would have been stuffed in there I didn’t think I could get away with a big a crew as it’s real life later cousin. Sorry about the snarky FoW comment - it was based on a weird SS tiger tank car park collection I saw at a show and later realised was a game. Pair of spotty young herberts as it turned out…apparently intent on building the most powerful force imaginable. Hey ho, wouldn’t do for us all to be the same eh!
