The British are coming!

Well to be honest the British are actually here, or at least some of them.

In a desperate attempt to uphold my two posts a month resolution I’ve belatedly squeezed in this update, in lieu of anything better. As the Russians famously observed - sometimes quantity has a quality all of its own!

All figures below are 10mm Pendraken - from their lovely AWI range. I’m still undecided about basing. I’ve ordered a load of 25mm but these are sitting on 30mm x 2mm rounded corner ones so I can get an idea of what’ll work best. I think the charging pose may be too big for the 25’s. Hey ho.

So far I’ve painted 6 companies of the 64th Regiment for use with LFoD rules from LittlewarsTV, but the remaining two line plus the grenadier and light companies will be along shortly.

Eventually I hope to run an AWI campaign along the same lines as my previous blogs ECW one. Though I’ve now read fairly extensively around the subject I’m still struggling to define victory conditions for either side in terms of wargaming. The death of key personages such as Washington, capture of important settlements and winning or losing a certain number of battles on the trot must play a part I’m sure, but any suggestions from the cognoscenti would be gratefully received.

Finally, the new Geek Villain furry mat has turned up. After making my 6 x 4 board slightly too big (bad measuring) I rectified the error by using the excess to make two integral dice rolling or reinforcement holding areas. The wife was impressed. I told her I designed it that way on purpose. Lol.

Toodleooh for now.

  1. Those teeny Brits look really good JBM and the dice rolling area on your table is a great idea, no wonder the current Mrs Broom was impressed!

    1. Thank you Keith. I can always tell when she’s impressed - she rolls her eyes heavenwards and sighs.

    2. OMGOSH, my wife shows her appreciation in the EXACT same way.
I’m always impressing her with my wit and charm. 😀

  2. Very nice & well planned dice rolling trays JBM. (Wish I had thought of that explanation!) You might want to fall down the rabbit hole at Der Alt Fritz Journal, manufacturer of Fife & Drum’s lovely figures. Sorry I can’t cite the date but, a year or two back (or more?), he documented his solo Rev War (as we tend to call it over here) Campaign. Good stuff. Nice musings on his revised 7YW basing too. Cheers to your project. (Do the French allow apostles for that lovely wall display?) ~ Tom T

    1. Hi Tom, thanks for the tip off about the Alte Fritz journal I’ll pop along there in a mo and see what I can dig up. The lovely wall display is my fully functional matchlock musket and rest. Sadly last used properly in 2017. The apostles are on the bandolier hanging from one end of the rest - until I get around to stringing them up properly. The geek den is still a work in progress I’m afraid! Incidentally the black powder residue clinging to the associated kit was still enough to trigger sensors at Dover (several years later) whereupon our car was pulled to one side and searched from top to bottom.

    2. Time fly’s when you’re reading blogs JBM! Further back than I thought. Here’s a start for you. Full of good stuff.

I suspected as much about your apostles.
I once, pre 9/11, had the mail shirt I’d made in my carry on luggage taking it on Family Vacation to give to my Brother in Law. X-ray security guy at our regional airport paused, looked up, laughed, then waved me through. Oh, it’s you! Though I had a heck of a time in the Denver airport. Poor Brother M was, among other things, doing bomb disposal work then. Yep, he used the wrong bag for his carry on & got seriously searched because of residual traces. At every connection, both ways. I got the use of an accurate muted great kilt out of it!
Worn correctly, perhaps with a cravat, a great kilt would be Perfect for leisurely strolling your local market. Lots of room for stowing your shopping.

  3. Lovely AWI. I would wait for the 25mm bases to show up as to my eye, they look too open ordered on the 30mm.

    1. Thanks Norm. Wise words. I’ll wait for the 25’s.

  4. Very nice little men JBM …
The rounded cornered bases do look nice( I would say that though), but I think the smaller size will look better .
The dice throwing trays/trenches/bunkers are inspired… way better than towers.
    All the best. Aly

    1. Hi Aly, I’m going to bow to those of you “in the know” and go with the smaller sized bases. The integral trays seem to work quite well - a happy accident mind you.

  5. Nice set-up you've got there. And you've made a good start with those Brits. Got to agree with the others on the base size. As you saw earlier, mine are on 20mm wide bases and 25mm wouldn't look too large.

    1. Hi Chris, cheers for the game matey, I’ll deffo go for the 25’s. I’ve enjoyed painting these 10mm bods - far quicker when your figures are all wearing identical uniforms isn’t it.

Christ at this rate I’ll be doing ruddy Napoleonics before you know it!

  6. Yeah, post twice a month and be like me; your blogging hero. As I have appointed myself. 😀
Nice progress on the AWI. Inspired fix to the game table. I have no insights on a campaign; I’ve never been in a successful one. They all fizzled out quickly.

    1. Stew you didn’t have to appoint yourself - you are my blogging hero! Especially since you took a month off and then just returned as though nothing had occurred. The very epitome of insouciance with your devil may care American charm.

  7. All coming together a treat there JBM, great stuff. The AWI's look really well painted, you have been busy. Table looks good and clever idea re the sides too, useful. I like the musket and rest on the wall, I had to keep my old ACW Enfield in a locked gun cabinet, which always seemed a bit daft :) Life in France is obviously suiting you again and you are well out of the shambles back here in Blighty mate.

    1. Hey Lee, it’s a bit sad seeing the old musket up on the wall rather than in use but it’s done it’s time I suppose. As to safety - a french neighbour of mine once told me to avoid the LOADED shotgun propped up in the corner of his kitchen. Good job the lads in the chasse don’t drink to excess before and after their outings cos an accident could happen…oh wait :-(

  8. They look nice Mark and I'm not too worried about the more open look, as after all the British did fight in more open order (loose files?) as the campaign progressed and their tactics improved. Or at least that's my understanding. One thing to possibly factor into your campaign is the fact that the British government weren't that 'interested' in the conflict and political sqaubbles meant that the troops and commanders didn't get the support they wanted and needed.

    1. I think that was where I was going with it Steve, especially since the charging pose i’d chosen for these minis takes up more space. I’ll still wait for the 25 mm bases though and make the comparison. Patience is a virtue and all that. Political / military infighting on the British side is well worth replicating, lack of overall coordination too. Good point. Husbanding resources and an overall British loss after a few battles on the trot seems reasonable… in light of the lack of political enthusiasm for the conflict. Cheers for that.

  9. A very crafty and nice addition to the gaming table it was never a mistake. The 10mm Pendraken AWI is a lovely range I have quite a few painted mine are based on 40x20’s and closer together but that was before the LWTV rules came along, which I like a lot, but I’m not rebasing

    1. Rebasing is always a nightmare isn’t it. Another reason for agonising over it before committing!

  10. Lovely looking tiny AWI Brits, still quite a lot of detail? I'm sure you'd make fast work of a couple of Napoleonic armies after that sample? The matchlock looks very nice up on the wall and what a good plan to have extra space for rolling dice? Excellent work!
